Study #4 - Environment 2019

Study #4 is an aesthetic exploration of time. For this purpose, blotting paper was applied to the canvas and glued down with adhesive. The resulting canvas was placed in the artist’s flat from 2019 and left to its own devices. Gradually, dust and other dirt particles settled on the canvas. After just a few months, an extensive layer of dust formed, which developed into entire dusty landscapes over the years. The photographs were taken in 2022.

As for the circumstances of its creation: the work was not actually conceived as an independent work, but as an experiment based on the desire to capture and visualise the essence of time as the inevitable driving force behind all change and development. In this sense, the work functions as an experimental arrangement in which the dynamics between artistic creation and influences beyond the artist’s control are explored.

The work is also an important milestone in the artist’s biography. It was created during the phase in which Jakob Wlodarczyk made the decision to intensify his interest in art and to become an artist himself, whereby the creation of this work was one of the reasons for the decision he finally made.
Today, as it was five years ago, Study No. 4 is a personal space for the artist to reflect on the theme of time.
